All-Natural Cleaning Solutions
Store shelves are packed with commercial chemical cleaners that can be costly not only to your pocketbook but also to the environment and your health. There are alternatives. All-natural, everyday household items can be combined and used to give your home an eco-friendly green cleaning.
Here are a few eco-friendly recipes to get you started:
Mix 1/2 cup of soap with 1 gallon of hot water. For a fresh scent, add 1/4 cup of lemon juice.
Scrub, rinse with water, repeat if necessary.
Mix 2 teaspoons borax, 4 tablespoons vinegar and 3 cups hot water.
Use a damp cloth to wipe surfaces with the solution or you can use a non-aerosol spray bottle.
Plenty of ingredients found around the house can be used to soak up unwanted scents. A few:
- House plants purify the air
- Grind up slices of lemon in the garbage disposal
- Leave a box of baking soda in your refrigerator to soak up odors
- To spritz the house with a fresh scent, dissolve 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 2 cups of hot water then add a teaspoon of lemon juice. Pour it into a spray bottle (non-aerosol) and use as you would a commercial air freshener.
- Open a window. Let fresh air IN and residue and chemicals from harsh commercial cleansers OUT.
1 cup of Ivory soap mixed with1/2 cup of washing soda and 1/2 cup borax will leave clothes clean and fresh. Use 1 tablespoon for small loads, more for heavier loads.

Silver – The All-Natural Disinfectant
Silver has been known for its disinfectant properties for centuries. In ancient Greece and Rome it was used as a germicide.
Today, it’s still used.
The active ingredient in our green cleaning disinfectants is silver dihydrogencitrate (SDC), a patented, electrolytically-generated source of ionic silver which is stabilized in citric acid. This formulation took almost a decade to develop and patent. Unlike most commonly-used commercial or household antibacterial or cleaning products, it is colorless, odorless, non-flammable and non-corrosive. There are no fumes and it does not cause skin irritation. That makes it an effective and safe cleaner.
How safe? The Environmental Protection Agency categorizes all antimicrobial products according to a toxicity scale from I to IV (I being most toxic and IV being the least.) Traditional disinfectants, which use active ingredients such as ethanol or ammonium chloride, fall into categories I and II. The SDC dilution we use is classified as category IV.
How SDC Works
SDC’s power is that it acts as a Trojan Horse. Microbes react to the citric acid in the product as if it is food and ingest it. Once they do, the silver ion in the SDC ingredient enters the microbe and binds to its DNA. This blocks it from replicating itself and kills it. The silver ion also is attracted to sulfur-containing thiol groups found in metabolic and structural proteins bound to the surface of the membrane of a microbe. The SDC destroys the structure of these proteins, effectively killing the organism.
Common antibacterial surface-cleaning products are alcohol-based and simply kill germs on surfaces the moment they are applied. Our green cleaning products have staying power. Once applied to a hard surface, they continue killing germs for at least 24 hours. For high-traffic areas such as desks in schools and offices or tables and counters in restaurants, our green cleaning products offer a crucial benefit.
The SDC disinfectant we use also outlasts other silver-based products. Traditional silver-based disinfectants only kill germs for a short period of time and have a short shelf life. Not only do ours kill germs for 24 hours, but they have a shelf life of several years.
